I especially hate some film or in some cases digital photographers &nbsp;that say things like &#8220;This is straight out of the camera, I don&#8217;t<br \/>\nbelieve in altering the image&#8221; or some such nonsense. What do they think<br \/>\n showing an image on the screen is besides an alteration, and believe me<br \/>\n there is nothing natural about scanning or the guts of a DSLR. &nbsp;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.petapixel.com\/2013\/03\/01\/getting-it-right-in-the-camera-the-truth-the-myth-the-bs\/#more-102808\">Read here<\/a>&nbsp;for another take.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>\nOn my part I consider the taking of the photograph the most important part and what comes later just window dressing.<\/p>\n<h4>\nThe Shaw-Pellegrin Controversy Around The Photographer Of The Year Awards<\/h4>\n<div id=\"DiscussTopic\">\nThis year there seems to be a lot more then the usual controversy over<br \/>\nthis year&#8217;s World Press selections for photograph of the year.<\/div>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.designboom.com\/art\/world-press-photo-2013-image-alteration-controversy\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">www.designboom.com\/art\/world-press-photo-2013-image-alter&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nppa.org\/node\/36604\" rel=\"nofollow\">nppa.org\/node\/36604<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2013\/2\/20\/4009724\/photo-contest-winner-controversy-how-much-editing-is-too-much\" rel=\"nofollow\">www.theverge.com\/2013\/2\/20\/4009724\/photo-contest-winner-c&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.petapixel.com\/2013\/02\/19\/why-do-photo-contest-winners-look-like-movie-posters\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">www.petapixel.com\/2013\/02\/19\/why-do-photo-contest-winners&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Everybody loves a real life soap opera.  This is a failure of<br \/>\nthe editing process for photojournalism, what ever happened to fact<br \/>\nchecking?<\/p>\n<p>Not to side with Pellegrin but his I&#8217;m a blogger not a reporter reasoning<br \/>\nis some what of a cop-out while his hiding behind  being a critic might be a<br \/>\n more valid reason.<\/p>\n<p>I think the bigger picture is the partial lack of standards for the POY<br \/>\norganization. It&#8217;s not as though this is the Oscars but it is looking<br \/>\nmore and more like show business. Hopefully next year might be<br \/>\ndifferent:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lens.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/02\/28\/prize-winning-photos-and-lingering-questions\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">lens.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/02\/28\/prize-winning-photos-an&#8230;<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not as though there aren&#8217;t any standards for &#8220;SOOC&#8221; at least for reporters. It&#8217;s a pity that the POY didn&#8217;t know about them until after the 2012 awards:<\/p>\n<p>Interesting that the last photo in the above article wouldn&#8217;t even pass:<\/p>\n<p><b><i>A handbook of Reuters journalism<br \/>\nA guide to standards, style and operations<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"yui_3_7_3_1_1362326956936_419\"><p>\n<b><u>Photoshop and how to use i<\/u>t<\/b><br \/>\nPhotoshop is a highly sophisticated image manipulation programme. We use<br \/>\n only a tiny part of its potential capability to format our pictures,<br \/>\ncrop and size them and balance the tone and colour. For us it is a<br \/>\npresentational tool.
